Complete worked example — a support assistant

In one line: Every pattern from this chapter, glued together into one feature: a customer-support assistant that retrieves from your docs, looks up real orders via tools, escalates to humans when stuck, runs under cost/safety guardrails, and ships with evals and observability.

Here, we wire them into one request handler, a deploy story, and a what-to-monitor checklist. Read it as the "what shipping looks like" snapshot.

What we're building

A chat assistant for Acme Corp's customer support. Requirements:

  1. Answer doc questions from product help articles (RAG).
  2. Look up real order data when asked (tools).
  3. Escalate to a human when out of scope or when the user requests one.
  4. Stream responses for snappy UX.
  5. Run under budget caps, with prompt + response caching.
  6. Resist prompt injection and never leak data across tenants.
  7. Degrade gracefully when a provider has a bad day.
  8. Be observable — every call traced, every tool logged, every eval scored.

What to monitor

A working dashboard for this feature:

  • TTFT p50/p95 per tier.
  • Total cost / day, per-tenant breakdown.
  • Fallback rate — % of requests served by each rung (primary, cheap, cache, non-ai, unavailable).
  • Eval score — nightly rerun, plotted over time.
  • Escalation rate — % of conversations ending in escalateToHuman. Healthy is single-digit %.
  • Tool-call distribution — which tools, how often, with what error rates.
  • Citation-invalid rate — how often the model invented an ID we dropped (should be < 1%).

Alerts:

  • TTFT p95 > 2 s for 10 minutes.
  • Fallback rate > 5% for 10 minutes.
  • Eval score regression > 5% vs. yesterday.
  • Tenant daily cost > 80% of cap.

What's not in this snippet (deliberately)

The example is honest about the happy path; the real production system also has:

  • Citation UI in the client (clickable links to doc_url).
  • Confirmation card for any proposed_tool_call from the model.
  • A/B harness for prompt iteration with traffic-split + paired eval.
  • Schema migrations in the embedding/cache stores (the silent landmine on a model upgrade).
  • Multi-region failover if your SLA demands it.

These are all "another day's work" on top of the pattern — not changes to the pattern.

Watch out for

  • Hard-coding model names everywhere. Centralize the tier list in one config; you'll swap it.
  • Trace data growing without bound. Set retention on Langfuse / trace store; PII-scrubbed isn't free.
  • An eval set that the team built and then never updated. Add prod failures to it weekly. The compounding loop from evals is what keeps quality from drifting.
  • No "what if a tier is fully down" drill. Once a quarter, flip support_assistant.killed = true for 5 minutes during a low-traffic window. Verify the cache + FAQ + unavailable rungs all behave.
  • Letting the eval set itself rot. Cases that no longer match the product are noise. Audit and prune quarterly.

The shape that recurs

Look at the handler again. Strip away the tools, the schema, the cache — the shape is:

authorize → retrieve → bounded generate → validate → cache → log → respond / fallback

That shape is every production AI feature. Email summary, voice agent, code generator, billing assistant. The boxes are filled differently; the wiring is the same. Once you build it once, you reuse it forever.
